It’s been 2 months since my last blog. I’ve been working feverishly lately to hit a number of design deadlines.
Unfortunately, as usual, a lot of these projects I am not able to share online due to confidentiality agreements – hence the sound of crickets over here on the blog. I’m tweeting (alot) over here: TWITTER
Back in April I upgraded my Adobe Creative Suite to the new version of CS5. The new features such as content aware fill (Photoshop), independent corner rounding (InDesign) and pixel grids (Illustrator) really make this a worthwhile upgrade. I’ll be sharing some of these cool features in upcoming blog posts.
The warehouse at RDD was one of the big losers in the “Big Storm of 2010″. The front rooms flooded completely.. walls needed to be ripped out and much stock was lost. Rosanne – being the opportunistic type, decided to make this her chance to do a full front renovation. The shop is now freaking amazing -polished concrete floors and some really cool kooky stock (including a beautiful cow-hide chest I have my eye on)
Get in there and check it out if you are in the area.
There’s also another stock launch night coming up – with very very limited places, so get in contact quickly to ensure you reserve your spot.
I have a trusting bunch of friends/family who want me to create tattoo designs for them. This is a huge privilege that I am still a little flabbergasted over, I mean – normal website design or logo designs aren’t so.. permanent!
This design was created for my good friend Pauly. She was my old boss back in my uni days working in fast food and is the most amazing person. She asked for a tattoo design of a gecko for her foot, so I gave her a couple options (considering the lady loves purple – in a crazy way):

These were revised to be green with purple spots:

Which Pauly said she loved, so I was happy but nervous at the same time – sometimes people (especially friends) say they love things even if they don’t, because they don’t want to upset me. Time passed – no word of the tattoo for over 6 months. I was SURE this was one of those cases.
Last week – completely out of the blue - I got a phone call from Ms Pauly herself to say it had been done.

It’s come up brilliantly. I would never have imagined you can get those greens in real life. The tattooist has done a great job with it!!
Thank you Pauly for trusting me with such a long term project. Love to you!
My brother decided he wanted to get a tattoo – and asked if I could design one for him. I was extremely flattered he liked my work enough to tattoo it on himself but put it off for as long as I could – mainly because I’m super critical of my design work. I was imagining the pain of “oh I should have moved that shape 1mm” staring at me from the shoulder of my sibling for the rest of.. well let’s face it.. forever.
Eventually after much pestering, I finally agreed to start work and got sketching. The brief.. “VW symbol in flames sis”. It was a bit out of my normal “puppies and kittens” illustration style but I thought I could give it a fair shot.
I sketched in the car on the way home from a very relaxing trip down south. It was “flamesey”.. and “vw symbolly”. The brief was met! I neatened it in my fancy design software.
I sent him the draft concept.

^ See how I bolded “draft” up there. That would make you believe that it was unfinished. Correct?
He was given strict instruction to look at it for 2 weeks then he could make changes and then get his tattoo – which I reminded him was forever.
Seems like patience does not run in the family – as today (2 days after emailing out the draft) – I get this via MMS.

I am extremely flattered that my brother loved the design enough to run out and get it put on his arm for the rest of his life.
I just think it would have been better if I moved the numbers 2mm down. :p
Love you bro. x
When you have a design job – the first thought is generally ‘who am I going to get to do this for me?!’.
Often people go first to the big names in the business – but this might not be the best move.
Freelance designers have a number of benefits over the big design firms. Here is just a short list of some:
1 – Rush Design Job? No worries!
2 – You get cheaper prices.
3 – You get fabulous customer service.

Welcome to the new blog.
It’s a place for me to show you what we’ve been working on and show you the interesting things I’ve seen.
Photoshop tutorials – awesome design work – inspiring illustators.. you get the picture.
